A learner’s story

Cia’s Story: From Freezing Up to Speaking Naturally

Before the challenge, Cia studied Korean the way most learners do, apps, grammar drills, writing sentences in a diary. She could put together a sentence on paper. But the moment she tried to actually speak? The words disappeared.

“Every time I tried to talk, I'd freeze up. I knew the grammar, I knew the words, but they just wouldn't come out.”

She signed up for the 30-Day Confidence Booster not knowing what to expect. The structure was simple: show up every day, listen, speak, record yourself.

Day by day, something shifted. It wasn't dramatic. It was slow, almost too slow to notice at first. But speaking started to feel less scary. The words came a little faster. The sentences felt a little more natural.

“I had to speak Korean every single day. That's what made the difference, I couldn't skip it, I couldn't hide behind a textbook.”

Then came the moment she didn't expect.

She was at a restaurant in Korea with a Korean friend, talking the way she always did, except this time, something was different. Her friend stopped mid-conversation and said:

“왜 이렇게 자연스럽게 말해? 어떻게 된 거야?!”
“Why are you suddenly so natural?! What happened to you?!”

That was when Cia realized: it wasn't just her imagination. Other people could hear the difference too.

“Now speaking Korean just feels… easier. I don't freeze up the way I used to. I can actually say what I want to say.”
Is this you?

You can understand Korean. So why won’t it come out of your mouth?

  • You understand far more Korean than you can actually say out loud.
  • You translate every sentence in your head, and by the time it comes out, it’s shrunk to something tiny.
  • You know grammar on paper, but you can’t answer automatically.
  • You hesitate because you’re not sure it’s right, so you stay quiet.
  • You don’t have anyone to practise speaking with.

This doesn’t mean you’re not trying hard enough. It means you need supported speaking practice, out loud, with real people.

Why speaking practice works

More grammar study won’t give your mouth the practice it needs.

Speaking gets easier through speaking: finding the words, listening to another person, and responding in the moment. The challenge gives you a simple structure to practise that skill consistently, with a buddy and personal guidance.

  • Practise out loud: short weekday missions build repetition without overwhelming you.
  • Listen and respond: ask and answer your fellow learners, not only the coach.
  • Get personal feedback: know what you did well and what to work on next.
  • Make mistakes safely: learn in a warm group where nobody expects perfection.

“At no stage throughout this challenge did I ever feel judged by anyone in this group, which gave me the space to make mistakes and to learn from them.”

“You don’t need perfect Korean to join in. You need a little space to practise, people to practise with, and feedback that helps you keep going.”

Real learner progress

Small daily steps can change what you’re able to say.

★★★★★

“This challenge really helped me speak more easily and gave me much more confidence. Having something to work on every day made a big difference and encouraged me to use Korean regularly.

Lily is very attentive and supportive. She explains things clearly and corrects our mistakes with a lot of patience. I also really liked the way the exercises gradually became more difficult. We reviewed the same grammar points several times during the month, which really helped me understand them and remember how to use them.

The weekly speaking groups were also a great experience. They gave me the opportunity to practise speaking in a friendly, supportive atmosphere and feel more comfortable with other learners.

After 30 days, I feel much more comfortable speaking Korean and I'm less afraid of making mistakes.

If you want to improve your Korean and, most importantly, feel more confident when speaking, this challenge is for you! Go for it! 🫶🏻”

“Before starting the class, I had very little to zero confidence in carrying a natural sounding conversation in Korean. Truthfully, the first day of this booster class, I was terrified and wanted to give up. I'm glad I stuck with it, in just 2 weeks, I was able to carry a conversation in Korean about British colonialism and its impact on former colonies, nationalism, and immigration! ... The format really forced me to get used to speaking in Korean.”

“Before starting the class, I didn't know how to talk consistently about a topic in more than one sentence. Now I can string a few thoughts and sentences together to form a more complete thought.”

“I was honestly terrified to take part in this challenge ... a gentle push is exactly what I needed. The daily speaking missions were just the right amount of challenging, and I really appreciated the detailed feedback.”

Who it’s for

Is the Confidence Booster Challenge right for you?

It’s for intermediate learners who can hold a basic conversation, understand Korean, but freeze, hesitate, or feel awkward when it’s their turn to speak. You know the basics. Now you need supported speaking reps and feedback.

Quick level check

Can you comfortably speak in Korean for two minutes about this question?

“Is there something you’ve been wanting to recommend to a friend lately? What is it?”

If you can already answer in Korean, even with a few pauses, this challenge is likely a good fit. If speaking for two minutes feels out of reach right now, you may want to build a little more foundation first.

It may not be the right fit if:

  • You’re a complete beginner who can’t yet read Hangul or build a basic sentence.
  • You want a quick fix without speaking out loud.
  • You can’t commit to regular speaking practice during the challenge.
  • You’re looking for grammar drills or vocabulary lists rather than speaking practice.
Meet your coach

👋 Hi, I'm Lily.

Lily, your coach

I'm the teacher behind Korean Cheat Code. I built this challenge for one reason: the message I kept getting was "I understand Korean, but I can't speak it." This is my answer to that. For 30 days, I’ll help you turn the Korean you already know into conversations you can take part in with more ease.
